General-purpose algae control for freshwater aquariums

AquaVascular Algaclear is a broad-spectrum algaecide for freshwater aquariums, targeting the most common algae types that plague both beginners and experienced aquarists: green water blooms, green spot algae on glass, hair algae, and thread algae. Unlike the more targeted BBA-Rid and Cyano-Rid — which are formulated specifically for black beard algae and cyanobacteria — Algaclear is your first-line treatment for everyday green algae problems.

Algae types Algaclear treats

  • Green water — the pea-soup bloom of single-celled algae that turns the entire tank green and can’t be filtered out mechanically
  • Green spot algae — the hard, disk-like green dots on aquarium glass and slow-growing plant leaves
  • Green hair algae — soft green filaments that grow in tufts on rocks, wood, and plant leaves
  • Thread algae — long, wispy green strands that drift in the current
  • Diatoms
  • Green film algae — the light green coating on glass that returns quickly after cleaning
  • Many more…

Why algae blooms happen in the first place

Algae always indicates an imbalance — usually excess nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) combined with too much light. Chemical treatment kills the current growth, but if you don’t address the underlying imbalance, algae will return. When you use Algaclear, treat it as a reset rather than an ongoing solution. Simultaneously reduce feeding, increase water change frequency, and check whether your lights are on too long or too bright.

How to use safely

Test water parameters first — Algaclear works best in a well-cycled tank with stable parameters. Dose at half strength on day 1 to observe livestock tolerance, then full dose on day 2 if fish are unaffected. Increase aeration during treatment — dying algae temporarily reduces dissolved oxygen. Perform a 30% water change 48 hours after final dose to clear dead algae residue.

Important warnings

  • Increase aeration during treatment. Add an air stone or increase surface agitation — dying algae consume oxygen as they decompose.
  • Do not overdose. More is not better. Excessive algaecide harms plants and can crash the biofilter.
  • Remove activated carbon and Purigen from the filter during treatment — they will absorb the algaecide before it can work.
